Freeze (*edited*)
At a lovely birthday gathering tonight, I enjoyed an internet feast of sorts - a spontaneous, casually-democratically-chosen smattering of YouTube videos and other materials/videos viewed on a humongous monitor/screen displaying an internet browser. One of the vids we saw was this video of an Improv Everywhere gag in NYC's Grand Central Station; their 'gang' of 200 people, armed with synchronized watches, froze in place at an agreed-upon time and stayed that way for a full five minutes, much to the consternation of passers-by and GCS workers (well, eventually, anyway, as New Yorkers are inured to much unusual behavior in their midst). From my perspective, the result seemed to be an eerie but beautiful quiet and mildness, reinforcing the humanity in such a hustle-bustle, transient, impersonal space. There's apparently a 'Freeze' coming up in Austin on Saturday 5 April, show-up time is 10:20am, at the Farmers' Market at the Tony Burger Center. They need as many participants as possible, either as fellow 'freezers' or as photographers/vidographers on the sly.

Here's the info: April 5th at the Tony Berger Center Farmers Market at 10:20 am for a 10:55 am freeze

Location: Tony Berger Center Farmer's Market. 3200 Jones Rd Austin, TX 78745 (Use Google to find directions from your location) We can gather at the parking lot directly between the porto-potties and the Italian restaurant next door. Far enough away to talk then we can drive up and mingle.

Duration of Freeze: 5 minutes. Allows just enough for the stares, but not too long to get ignored. And I am too old to stay still for any longer.

Photographers/Videographers: We need as many as possible, and have something to conceal the video cameras. If people can see them, they will act differently. This is a Farmers Market, so boxes and canvas bags are the norm here. If we can start a list somewhere with who can come as a participant and who can come as a citizen reporter, that would rock.

How to tell: Everyone have a blue bandanna or scarf or piece of material sticking out your front pocket. Back pocket and you may have passed the person before you realize you are in the same group.

From the I.E. site above, you can click on I.E. Global, and join the Austin group if you'd like.  Then you'll have access to the Austin forum to see/participate in ongoing discussions about this and upcoming missions around town.

I was disappointed to have missed the Zombie Walk last fall, and want to make it to the Freeze event if at all possible. It's public art, I think.
